Two harm reduction programmes - Methadone Maintenance Therapy (MMT) and Needle & Syringe Exchange Programme (NSEP) - have been hugely successful in effectively reversing the tide of HIV infections among People Who Inject Drugs (PWID). Malaysia is now a best practice model globally for these harm reduction programmes.
HUMANIZE advocates for harm reduction ensuring that Malaysian smokers have access to alternative products and support to quit smoking, which maximises public health benefits and addresses the complex challenges posed by tobacco use.
There are moves toward stricter regulations to curb smoking rates and e-cigarette usage, ban the sale of flavoured cigarettes, reduce nicotine levels in cigarettes, and mandate graphic health warnings covering 85% of cigarette packaging. Additionally, there are plans to stop the sale, distribution, and import of e-cigarettes and vaping devices.
HUMANIZE works with businesses to explore options for implementing sugar harm reduction strategies, such as low-calorie sweeteners (LCS) usage. Other avenues include reformulating recipes, offering smaller portion sizes, and promoting healthier alternatives.
